About WarPaths
WarPaths is a single-player national security wargaming platform. Players take a seat in a real-world crisis scenario, consult AI advisers, issue orders turn by turn, and are scored on the quality of their strategic reasoning across five dimensions rather than on where the pieces ended up. Scenarios are authored by national-security professionals, and think tanks and consultancies can turn their own reports into playable games for their audiences. WarPaths is built by Strategy Connections (founder Thomas Nagle, PhD in international relations, Georgetown). The solo game format is called SAGE (Solo/AI Game Experience).
What is WarPaths for?
Two things. For an individual, it is practice at the decisions the job is about, with a score that reads the reasoning rather than the outcome, and a record that accumulates across games. For an organization, it is a way to put a report in play: readers take a seat in the crisis the analysis describes, and the organization sees how its audience reasoned.
The platform is in beta. Access is by request, and the scenarios open to play are listed on the scenarios page.
Who builds it?
Strategy Connections, the operating company behind WarPaths. The first WarPaths platform, launched in 2024, ran facilitated group wargames, seminar and matrix formats, for teams spread across locations and time zones; it grew out of the problem of running a serious game when nobody could be in the same room. That platform still serves its existing users. The single-player format is where the work is now, built on the same conviction: the value of a wargame is the options and the reasoning it surfaces, not the counters.
Who is the founder?
Thomas Nagle, PhD, is the founder of WarPaths and a retired US Army strategist and former armor officer. He held strategy and planning positions with Multi-National Corps Iraq, the Army Staff at the Pentagon, US Special Operations Command and US Central Command, and his academic research focused on national-level strategic decision processes during war termination. He holds a PhD in international relations and an MA in US national security policy from Georgetown University, a BS in economics from the US Military Academy at West Point, and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
